On September 2, 2010 an underground tour was arranged at the Hoyle Pond mine for seven third year medical students and three first year family medicine residents who attend the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The tour was part of their orientation to Timmins and provided them with an increased awareness of Occupational Medicine and the mining environment.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) has a mandate to contribute to improving the health of people and communities of Northern Ontario. One method of fulfilling this mandate is to increase the number of medical students who choose to live and work in Northern Ontario after graduation.

The aim is to have class profiles which reflect the demographics of the population of Northern Ontario. It is the intention of the NOSM to maximize the recruitment of students who are from Northern Ontario and / or students who have a strong interest in and aptitude for practicing medicine in Northern urban, rural and remote communities. Since the start up of the school, Goldcorp has sponsored two medical students and is pleased to announce the sponsorship of four students this year.

Dr. Doug Arnold, Occupational Physician for the Porcupine mine sites, toured with the medical students and provided them with further insight into Occupational Medicine.

The students were required to complete orientation evaluation forms and Goldcorp received the highest rating of "Terrific" !

Thanks to all involved for making this tour successful!
