Porcupine Watchful Eye

The Porcupine Watchful Eye (PWE), previously called the Dome Watchful Eye, is a stakeholder group that was formed in 1999 to support the Dome mine's sustainability policy. The group accepted a greater challenge when the Porcupine Gold Mines was formed and the property more than tripled in land size. The main goal of this stakeholder group is to recognize and understand the requirements, expectations and concerns of all parties involved with PGM's activities. The group seeks to review identified issues and work with mine management to develop strategies that meet the needs of the stakeholders, community and company throughout and beyond mine life.

For many years the group has fostered a vision for a walking trail around Simpson Lake which is located adjacent to the historic Dome Mine. The group's goal is to establish a gravel-packed walking trail around the entire perimeter of the lake with numerous information boards at various locations, noting the local animals, flowers and mine history. This will be a valuable education tool for the surrounding elementary schools and another link in Timmins' extensive trail network. Porcupine Gold Mines will be the main contributor to this project in collaboration with community groups and other stakeholders.

"As we approach 2009, which is the 100th year anniversary of one part of Goldcorp's Porcupine holdings, the Watchful Eye is proud to be a part of the process that has converted the area back to the original green (both grass and trees) that existed here 100 years ago.

It will be difficult to even be aware that the Coniaurum Mine ever existed, or where it was once rehabilitation efforts are completed. If the McIntyre headframe had not been preserved for the City, it also would have been removed. Only a few people would have remembered just where it stood. The rehabilitation of these mine sites will be living evidence that mining doesn't have to be an eyesore to our City. We are not done yet, but we will certainly continue to work with Porcupine Gold Mines to give back to our City something to be proud of."
